For over five decades New Zealanders have been making an impact in Nepal. Ever since Sir Edmund Hillary first set up a school in a small Sherpa village near Everest called Khumjung, New Zealanders have been giving their time, money and support to help the people of Nepal through the Himalayan Trust.
We’ve helped by building schools and hospitals, training teachers and doctors, supplying volunteers, restoring forests, providing help in emergencies and much more. Ed led the way for the Trust until his death in 2008. Now we try to follow in his footsteps and continue the work that was most valuable to him. To Ed, his greatest achievement was not climbing Everest, but helping the people of Nepal.
The Himalayan Trust is an international non-profit humanitarian organisation working in the Solukhumbu region of Nepal. Our aim is to improve the health, education and general wellbeing of people living in this region—an area where Sir Edmund Hillary first set off to climb Mt Everest and where he ended up spending many years over his lifetime.
Sir Edmund Hillary founded the Himalayan Trust in 1960, and ever since then we have been working alongside our friends and partner organisations in Nepal to help the people of the Everest region with health, education and general wellbeing.
