A safe place to shelter

The Baraili family lost everything in 2015 earthquakes.

Padam Baraili, his wife Labhi and their four daughters live in the small village of Thulo Gumela with ten other families. The small village is perched high up above Phakding in the mountainous Solukhumbu region.

The clouds often roll up the valley here and it can turn suddenly bitterly cold up, even as spring officially begins.

The village is off the main tourist route below, and misses out on the economic benefits that other villages reap from the passing trekkers. Every house in Thulo Gumela was severely damaged in the 2015 earthquakes and all ten families had no choice but to sleep outside under tarpaulins for one month.

Following the earthquake, Padam Baraili said they had no support until they were visited by the Himalayan Trust.

“When we lost our home we faced a very big problem, we had no proper place for our family,” said Padam.

The families urgently needed emergency shelter, so the Himalayan Trust funded the construction of ten relief houses for each of the families. In total, 31 relief houses were built in the Solukhumbu region for families who lost everything in the earthquakes.

“When it was the rainy season our four children were able to sleep in the relief house and stay warm and dry. I’m just so happy, I have a very big heart for the help that the Himalayan Trust has given us.”
