Five years on from the 2015 Nepal earthquake

Today marks five years since the devastating 2015 Nepal earthquake. The magnitude 7.8 quake killed nearly 9,000 people, injured over 22,000 and left millions homeless.

Thanks to you, our generous donors and supporters, we were able to provide immediate help to devastated communities in Nepal with emergency shelter, tarpaulins and tents, warm clothing, waterproofs, emergency beds and blankets and emergency homes for families whose homes had been destroyed.

In the years following, you have funded the rebuild of 150 earthquake-strengthened classrooms at 36 schools across the Everest region, including Khumjung School – the first school built by Sir Ed in 1961. Because of you, over 7,000 children in the Everest region of Nepal could return to school in classrooms made stronger and safer than ever before.

Today, Nepal faces a new crisis with the COVID-19 pandemic, and just as with the 2015 earthquake we are responding quickly. Right now we are actively supporting COVID-19 prevention and we will be funding personal protective equipment (PPE) and other supplies as needs arise. This is only possible because of your ongoing support, thank you so much.

To Sir Ed, his greatest achievement was not climbing Everest, but helping the people of Nepal. We will continue his legacy through thick and thin.
